Upcoming Event: March 8, Orcas Island Grange, 4 pm
Mark your calendars! On March 8, at 4 pm, local seaman Gavin Brackett will present his recent build of Surf Scoter, a fast, powered outrigger named after a sea duck. Weather permitting, Gavin will bring Surf Scoter to the talk for informal after-presentation show and tell.
Donations accepted, to benefit Wooden Boat Society of the San Juan Islands.

An Orcas Island built craft constructed with modern materials, but with a design founded on ancient Polynesian principles. The gas-powered outrigger is beautifully efficient and a minimalist craft using as few materials and resources as possible to achieve exceptionally long range. Designed by Paul Bieker (a prolific local designer known for his innovative multihull designs as well as the PT skiff), the Outrigger 25 achieves excellent MPG due to its sleek design and lightweight materials.
Paul Bieker developed the power outrigger. His latest 24-footer achieves a cruising speed of 15 knots and 25 max, with a 25 hp 4-stroke outboard. Power outriggers should really become the maritime “pickup truck”. Bieker says:
We started with the 20-foot power 'Proa' as a template and modified it for a slightly bigger motor and simpler structure using less carbon reinforcement. This boat has a fuller bow and the outrigger depth and trim were tweaked based on experience with the 20-footer. Smooth. Sleek. Simple.
